Project Name: PMU Establishment for uMfolozi TVET College
Project Description: The Technology Innovation Support Programme (TISP) was aimed at supporting entrepreneurs and innovators with technology-driven ideas that encourage local production and manufacturing. Furthermore, the programme assisted innovators with technology commercialisation, technical assistance, and support for developing (enhancing) a new products or services.
Project description – Establishment of a Project Management Unit within the uMfolozi TVET College environment that is responsible for the implementation of all Artisan development projects, Occupational programmes, Learnerships and Skills programmes respectively. The scope included conducting a project maturity assessment of the project’s unit, designing new Business and Operating Models for the PMU, a Financial Model, and an Organisational Structure.
Key Deliverables included:
- Recruitment and Onboarding: Programme activation and rollout which includes TISP recruitment and selection of 20 participants from the King Cetywayo District, KZN
- Assessment: Conduct Technology needs assessment of 20 recruited entrepreneurs/ innovators
- Business Training and Development Services, including but not limited to:
- - Technology Commercialisation
- - Market Access and Development
- - Venture Acceleration
Outcomes: The programme provided critical support for participants’ market entry, facilitated strategic linkages, and fostered entrepreneurial growth. Lessons learned included the importance of tailored support for SMMEs in overcoming commercialization barriers.
Impact: 20 Entrepreneurs were successfully supported and now have small enterprises that are training with some already employing people. Also, the programme strengthened local innovation ecosystems and enabled SMMEs to access market and funding opportunities for growth and sustainability.
